Abuse victims’ attorney reacts to state police investigating clergy abuse
SUMMARY: State Police have obtained a search warrant to collect all abuse-related documents from the Archdiocese of New Orleans in a major development in the criminal investigation of child sex abuse in the local Catholic Church. This unprecedented demand for documents, which the Church has tried to keep secret for years, includes records of clergy sexual abuse and communication between Church leaders and the Vatican. The move has been hailed by victims' attorney Richard Trahan, who represents nearly 80 abuse survivors, as a long-awaited step towards justice. Survivors have expressed relief and gratitude for law enforcement's serious attention to their complaints.
The search warrant was signed by Orleans Parish Magistrate Judge Juana Lombard on Monday.
