Sterlington Police Chief warns the public about venomous snakes due to excessive heat

SUMMARY: Researchers have found that venomous snakes are more active during heatwaves, such as the one being experienced in Northeast Louisiana. The high temperatures cause snakes to leave their burrows in search of food and water. Northeast Louisiana is home to seven different types of venomous snakes. The Sterlington Police Department is urging citizens to be cautious of snakes during hot weather and to avoid messing with them if encountered. Snakes are afraid of humans, and it is advised to leave them alone. Snakes are attracted to overgrown vegetation and grass and require moisture to stay cool and hydrated. In case of encountering a potentially venomous snake, it is important to contact the Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries instead of trying to catch or kill it.

Temperatures will cool down after the front passes. Mild temperatures and gusty south winds are expected tonight. Low clouds may bring drizzle or sprinkles, but measurable precipitation is unlikely. Overall, there were minor tweaks to the forecast.

SUMMARY: Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry has requested federal assistance to support the state’s crawfish industry, which has been hit hard by a summer drought. The request aims to expand the Emergency Livestock Assistance Program to cover losses for farm-raised fish, including crawfish. The drought has led to a decrease in crawfish production and higher prices. Louisiana is the top producer of crawfish in the US, contributing over $425 million to the state’s economy. Governor Landry is urging the federal government to provide relief to the farmers and fishermen who play a crucial role in the state’s economy.
