Program to help give families money for fresh produce
SUMMARY: The Fresh Connect program, led by the No Kid Hungry campaign in Washington DC, aims to reduce hunger by improving food security for families. Families in select parishes in Louisiana can receive $40 on a Fresh Connect debit card every month for six months to purchase groceries at major chains and local retailers. The program targets families with children aged 3-17 enrolled in a Medicaid Health Plan. Positive feedback has been received, as the extra funds enable families to afford healthier food options that are typically out of reach on a limited budget. Referrals from doctors are required to enroll in the program.
The Fresh Connect program was created for families to be able to use food as medicine. It will also help families get more access to fruits and vegetables, fighting health concerns and hunger.
