LA Legislative Auditor discusses the Legislative Special Session

SUMMARY: Louisiana saved nearly $153 million in 2017 with bipartisan public safety laws called the justice reinvestment initiative (JR I). An audit released this week shows that the reforms have reduced overall prison population and saved money, but some measures may be rolled back by lawmakers. The audit found that $153 million in savings did not trickle down locally, with funds remaining at the state level. Additionally, there is no consensus on the efficacy of JR I among criminal justice stakeholders due to a lack of data and differing views on the reforms. The audit aims to inform legislative discussions on potential changes to the JR I program.

SUMMARY: A Morehouse Parish man was arrested for narcotics and possession of a firearm after a traffic stop. Arkansas requires students to complete 75 hours of community service to graduate, to help prepare them for the real world. Some parents question whether this requirement is unpaid work or true community service, but there are options to apply for a waiver for extenuating circumstances. The weather will remain mostly cloudy with a chance of thunderstorms in central Arkansas, but severe weather is expected to be outside of the area. Temperatures will reach the mid-80s before falling to the mid-60s and mid-40s.
