SUMMARY: Two years ago, Hurricane Ida caused extensive damage and power outages in the New Orleans region. The storm resulted in a catastrophic transmission failure, leaving over a million customers without electricity. Entergy, the utility company, faced criticism for not rebuilding a stronger power system after previous hurricane damage. However, they claim to have made progress in strengthening infrastructure, including substations and transmission lines. Recently, a $19 million federal grant was announced to help decrease power outages in Jefferson Parish. Efforts to improve power reliability include burying lines, improving poles and wires, and establishing community lighthouses powered by solar and batteries. Federal assistance will be necessary to fully upgrade the power grid in South Louisiana.

Exactly 2 years ago, Hurricane Ida hit the New Orleans area with a vengeance, damaging or destroying thousands of homes and businesses and knocking power out to all.

Another front is expected to move through after that. Overall, the state is transitioning out of drought conditions and experiencing mild weather.
