SUMMARY: Certain groups, such as children and pregnant women, are at risk during heatwaves. The excessive heat is causing snakes to come out of their burrows to escape the high temperatures. Venomous snakes are more active during heatwaves, and Louisiana is home to seven venomous snake species. Snakes are attracted to overgrown vegetation and moisture in order to stay cool and hydrated. Chief Bonner of the Sterlington Police Department is warning people to be more aware and cautious, as you never know when you might come across a snake.
