Sunday 5 PM Tropical Update: Watching Gulf and Atlantic for possible development

Published

SUMMARY: The southwestern Gulf has a high chance for tropical development, potentially forming a tropical depression or the season's first tropical storm this week. It's expected to move west-northwest, bringing significant rain to northern Mexico and southeastern Texas by midweek, but won't affect our local area directly. We will experience breezy conditions and sporadic heavy showers. Another area in the Atlantic has low development chances but will be monitored, especially near the Bahamas and Florida, influenced by dry air. Monday is anticipated to be the wettest day with intermittent heavy showers, easing slightly by Tuesday as drier air moves in.

There are two areas of possible tropical development in the Atlantic Basin. An area of showers and storms near the Yucatan Peninsula in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico has a high chance for development early this week. It is expected to move west-northwestward into Mexico and possibly south Texas by the middle of this week.

Additionally, there is a low chance for possible development in the western Atlantic Ocean near the Bahamas later this week which may lead to a small feature moving into the Southeast US late in the week. Watching for any updates on if this feature can trek west into the central Gulf Coast but it will have to contend with dry air first

SUMMARY: Tropical moisture is moving towards Southeastern Louisiana and South Mississippi, bringing localized, tiny showers this morning. While it will be mostly dry in the morning with a few spotty showers, rain chances will increase in the afternoon and evening on Father's Day. Expect scattered showers and storms later today, with temperatures in the mid to upper 80s. Although not as hot, rising humidity will make it feel muggy. This trend is expected to continue throughout the upcoming work week as tropical moisture pushes towards the central Gulf Coast around a high-pressure system.
