SUMMARY: Federal health authorities are preparing for the upcoming respiratory viral season, including COVID-19, flu, and RSV. They are optimistic due to the high rate of COVID-19 immunity among individuals 16 and older in the US. New vaccines from Pfizer, Moderna, and Novavax are expected to be available in mid-September. The vaccines provide robust protection against the omicron subvariant but their effectiveness against other strains is still unclear. There are indications that seniors or immunocompromised individuals may require a second COVID-19 vaccine dose. This year also marks the availability of preventive medicines against RSV for the first time. The challenge lies in ensuring vaccine uptake is as high as possible.

Sunday 5 PM Tropical Update: Watching Gulf and Atlantic for possible development

Published

on

www.youtube.com – – 2024-06-16 19:02:03

SUMMARY: The southwestern Gulf has a high chance for tropical development, potentially forming a tropical depression or the season's first tropical storm this week. It's expected to move west-northwest, bringing significant rain to northern Mexico and southeastern Texas by midweek, but won't affect our local area directly. We will experience breezy conditions and sporadic heavy showers. Another area in the Atlantic has low development chances but will be monitored, especially near the Bahamas and Florida, influenced by dry air. Monday is anticipated to be the wettest day with intermittent heavy showers, easing slightly by Tuesday as drier air moves in.

There are two areas of possible tropical development in the Atlantic Basin. An area of showers and storms near the Yucatan Peninsula in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico has a high chance for development early this week. It is expected to move west-northwestward into Mexico and possibly south Texas by the middle of this week.

Additionally, there is a low chance for possible development in the western Atlantic Ocean near the Bahamas later this week which may lead to a small feature moving into the Southeast US late in the week. Watching for any updates on if this feature can trek west into the central Gulf Coast but it will have to contend with dry air first
