Activists frustrated with time restrictions, state leaders say special session on crime moving ‘too

SUMMARY: Criminal justice advocates filed for a temporary restraining order to pause the number of bills advanced out of the House Criminal Justice Committee in Louisiana. Norris Henderson and two other activists filed the restraining order against state Representative Debbie Villi and Speaker Philip Devillier, concerned that citizens were not given a chance to be heard on proposed bills. The House Criminal Justice Committee is allowing limited time for public comment, and all 24 items on the governor's agenda have been reviewed and will go to the house and Senate floor. Lawmakers are concerned that life-altering decisions are being made too quickly, and state Representative Mandy Landry anticipates a petition hearing to be scheduled. The special session on crime must end by March 6th.

“We've been suspending rules left and right, which means the bills can move through the process at an accelerated pace,” said Representative Mat Willard.

Louisiana bill advances to rid testing for florist licenses

SUMMARY: The Louisiana Legislature is considering repealing the required license test for florists to sell flowers, making Louisiana the only state to require such a test. State Rep. Mike Bayham argues that flowers do not pose a safety or health risk and that the current testing and licensing system creates a barrier to entry into the marketplace. Bayham’s bill would combine all licenses into one permit process, with florists only needing to pay the annual fee. The current system has faced criticisms, including a lawsuit filed by a woman who couldn’t pass the test multiple times and believes it is too rigorous.

The foundation provides resources such as online screening quizzes and a directory of organizations that offer low-cost or free testing and screenings for the uninsured or underinsured. Health experts recommend at least one routine yearly screening and suggest contacting a primary care provider to schedule a cancer screening. Anyone experiencing signs or symptoms should reach out to their primary doctor.

A low pressure system has deepened across the central plains, and the associated cold front will track further south. Winds will continue to blow out of the south giving us plenty of moisture to work with. A few light showers cannot be ruled out for the first half of today due to the available moisture but most of anything that falls will be drizzle. T-Storms are possible late this evening and overnight mainly further north as the cold front draws near. Best chances for severe weather will be north in central Arkansas where better forcing will be. The cold front will stall and weaken before another system arrives on Thursday. This cold front will provide better forcing and spark up chances for showers and thunderstorms that evening. High winds and small hail cannot be ruled out with some of these storms. The unsettled pattern looks to continue through the weekend. Temperatures will fall by Sunday to the 60's for highs, and lows could fall to the upper 40's. The good news is sunshine will return by next Monday as we dry out some.
