Farmers share storm stories as they prepare for hurricane season

Published

SUMMARY: Each year, we stress the importance of being storm-ready early in the hurricane season, which runs from June 1st to November 30th. Tropical systems thrive on warm water, typically available within this window, though exceptions exist. This year, a La Niña pattern, which generally results in more tropical systems, is developing. Expect more storms as Atlantic conditions—warmer waters and lower wind shear—favor system growth. From 1991-2020, the average was 14 named storms, seven hurricanes, and three major hurricanes, but forecasts, like those from Colorado State, predict higher numbers. Regardless, always be prepared and rely on the First Alert weather team for updates.

In Louisiana, hurricanes bring significant damage, notably to the agriculture and forestry sectors. Farmers like Adam Hebert and timber workers like Sam Puitt face immense challenges. Hurricanes, like Laura, cause devastating crop and timber losses. Trees, requiring decades to mature, represent long-term economic commitment; thus, any hurricane damage can set back recovery by decades. For rice farmers, issues like flooding and power loss further exacerbate challenges, leading to spoiled crops and increased costs. Despite the hardships and the losses, often uninsured, the agricultural community remains resilient, continuing their way of life despite the ongoing threats from hurricanes.

Hurricane season can cause millions of dollars in damage and an untold amount of heartache, and this is true for those in Louisiana's agriculture industry as well.

Many Louisiana communities depend on agriculture and forestry. However, for those who work in it day in and day out, these industries are far more than a business, a major job contributor and an economic engine. It truly is a way of life.
