SUMMARY: A bill in the Louisiana legislature, Senate Bill 207, aims to ban cell phones in public schools during instructional hours. The bill, proposed by State Senator Beth Maelle, would require students to turn off their phones during the school day starting in the 2024-2025 school year. Supporters of the bill believe that cell phones are a distraction to learning and that enforcing a state law would make it easier for teachers to manage student behavior. However, some students express concerns about not being able to contact their parents in emergencies. The bill is currently under review in the committee on education after passing the Senate by a vote of 39 to 2.

A bill that is currently passing through the Louisiana legislature could have a huge impact on devices on campus next school year.

KPLC teen reporter Leo Bowman reports on this bill that could ban cell phones from being used on school property.
